Platinum Dunes Brings Freddy Krueger Back to Life!

Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have been set by New Line to re-launch Freddy Krueger, the iconic psycho who haunts the subconscious dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep.

The trio will create a new franchise based on “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” the 1984 Wes Craven film.

Originally played by Robert Englund, Krueger haunted nine films and two TV series, and was New Line’s most lucrative franchise until “The Lord of the Rings.”

The deal comes as Bay, Fuller and Form ready for an April start for “Friday the 13th,” a New Line re-launch of another iconic baddie, Jason Voorhees. Marcus Nispel will direct a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift (”Freddy Vs. Jason”).

Both franchises will be given a complete overhaul, something that Platinum Dunes provided in the Nispel-directed “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” New Line won’t hire a writer on “Nightmare” until the writer’s strike ends.

Platinum Dunes is busy. At Rogue Pictures, the producers are prepping an untitled David Goyer-directed exorcism thriller which has “Cloverfield” star Odette Yustman set to star, and a “Near Dark” remake that will be directed by Samuel Bayer. Bay, Fuller and Form are also developing a Universal remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds,” with Martin Campbell directing Naomi Watts.

Julianne Moore will topline the supernatural horror thriller, which is being produced by Nala Films, according to Variety. “Shelter,” based on a script by Michael Cooney (”Identity”), will be directed by the Swedish duo Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein (”Storm”). Lensing starts in late March in Pittsburgh. The logline is being kept under wraps, but we’ll do some digging to see what we can find out. The budget is in the $22 million-$25 million range and will be financed through Nala Investments, parent of Nala Films.

Paul Andrew Williams’s horror-comedy The Cottage now has a trailer, and damn, does it look fun. Get crackin’ and watch it here.

Andy Serkis and Reece Shearsmith play a pair of fools who kidnap super-hottie Jennifer Ellison, the daughter of an underworld kingpin. They hide away in the titular location attempting to avoid trouble, however, an evil farmer prevents that from happening.

The film bows in the UK this March. Sony’s Screen Gems is handling U.S. distribution.

Guillermo Del Toro to Direct The Hobbit?

Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Toro. Rumblings had been that the job would go to Sam Raimi but with Raimi hard at work on his new low budget horror film Drag Me To Hell and producers anxious to get going on these just as soon as the writer’s strike ends, allowing them to get the scripts into shape, The Hollywood Reporter is now reporting that New Line and MGM are in talks with Guillermo Del Toro to shoot the two Hobbit films back to back. Which would be an excellent move, though I’m still not at all clear on what the second film is actually supposed to be …

Jason watches Teeth

Jason watches “Teeth”

Have you ever felt that maybe your entire life has just been practice? That all the joy, frustration, hopes, fears, triumph and failure is just preparing you for a special moment when you watch the movie that makes it all worthwhile? No? Maybe it’s just me….

The vagina dentata myth has existed in just about every culture. And if you don’t think there are remnants left in our modern culture, look closer. It survives in characters of dangerous, sexual women (such as the stereotypical wicked stepmother, stealing the good but weak father away). And it survives in visual symbols, often in surprising places. Next time you watch Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”, check out the mouth of Ursula’s cave (Ursula, of course, is a classic vagina dentata character). For that matter, re-watch “Return of the Jedi” and think about he Sarlacc pit–probably not intentional, but was there something in George Lucas’ subconscious that chose that form for terror? We’ve even invented an anti-rape device that turns the myth into reality.

Anyway, on to the movie. I just wanted to prove I’m not really crazy for looking forward to this movie. The myth has a long and illustrious history, and I’ve long thought it’s due for a modern revisiting. With this movie, the result is the greatest superhero movie ever! Maybe I’m supposed to be scared, but this is really far more comedy than horror. Dawn is a young abstinence enthusiast, so unfamiliar with her own body she doesn’t realize she has an extra set of teeth. When she meets a totally dreamy boy in her abstinence club (which from what I read is the primary activity of such clubs), one thing leads to another…and ends poorly–stump #1! The final stump count is only 7, and that’s a little inflated since 4 are fingers. Fingers from the same hand. Yeah, the gynecologist scene is awesome! Anyway, it’s set up well for a sequel–which I’d be the first in line to see.

Watch the First Ten Minutes of ‘All the Boys Love Mandy Lane’!

Posted by eric ringer in News on January 27th, 2008

all

It’s nice to find a juicy treat to chew on over the weekend. Today I got the link to Yahoo! UK where you can watch the first 10 minutes of the awesome All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, which hits UK cinemas on February 15 while the US is still looking for a date. In the film a group of high schoolers invite Mandy Lane (Amber Heard), a good girl who became quite hot over the summer, to a weekend party on a secluded ranch. While the festivities rage on, the number of revelers begins to drop quite mysteriously. This comes thanks to our buddy Joey M. and Yahoo Movies UK.
